AKA: Prop Master, Props, Property, Assistant Property Master
The person responsible for buying, acquiring, and/or manufacturing any props needed for a
production. The property master is responsible for all aspects of prop use on the set and,
in conjunction with the script supervisor, for maintaining set continuity. Contrast with
set dresser.
David Perun's's own words about the job of Property Master:
How I got started in film work
I started working in film when I offered to volunteer on a feature Canadian film
as a set dresser. After a few days I was told I was on the payroll. After 2
years in the Set decoration department I switched to the prop department to be
closer to the actors and be more involved in the story line and make more use of my
sculpture background.
Definition of Props vs Set decoration
Props deals with anything the actor interacts with.
Or sometimes items that are portable or not part of the set that the camera
focuses up close on.

Set Decoration is the furniture & furnishings such as drapes & paintings as
well as small items which the actor does not interact with.
Role of prop master
I am part of the art department team.
I work under the guidance of the
Production Designer and answer directly to him or her.
I start with the script
I Break down the script & make lists of all the props
Do a budget
Decide which props I can rent, buy or have built.
Research special scenes eg medical or gunfire or forensic scenes.
Hire advisors like firearm handlers, medical techs or forensic technicians.
Then I sit down with the director and we discuss all the props and what options I
can provide for the special prop scenes.
I then talk to the other department heads about "crossovers" which are any
items which may involve my department and another department.
Multiples are made for any situation where something is broken, the rule of
thumb is to have six of anything being broken such as a breakaway beer bottle.
If the item is expensive this may be reduced to two or three.
Budget meeting with the production manager for budget approval
Then I meet with the actors to take measurements for rings & watch & eyewear
props and discuss with them their characters charactor defining props for their
preferences.
We will also discuss if their is any special training needed such as gun
training or a medical advisor for a hospital scene.
Process of acquiring props
I Start contracts for:
making rubbers: knives or guns
breakaway glass:
electronics: for props that light up or have to create movement
Graphics: newspapers, books or other paperwork, working with the art department
Myself and a buyer will then go out and rent or buy the remaining props to be used.
I will show the Production Designer the choices and get his or her feedback.
Finally I will have a show and tell meeting with the Director and sometimes the
producers and writers for their approval or feedback.
